When an air conditioner fails in July, the first question is usually whether to fix it or replace it. There is no single right answer, but a few factors decide most cases. Walking through them before the next breakdown makes the decision easier when it happens.
1. How old is the system?
Central air conditioners in the Sacramento Valley typically last 12 to 15 years, and sometimes longer with good maintenance. Many homes in Laguna, Laguna West, Lakeside, Stonelake and East Franklin were built in the 1990s and 2000s, so a lot of original systems are now well past that range. Age alone is not a reason to replace a working system, but an older system that needs a major repair deserves a second look.
2. Does it use R-22 refrigerant?
Systems installed before about 2010 often use R-22, a refrigerant that is no longer produced in the United States. If an R-22 system has a leak, recharging it is expensive and the leak is likely to return. For an R-22 system that needs refrigerant, replacement is usually the better long-term value. New systems use R-454B, one of the refrigerants that replaced older blends.
3. How big is the repair?
Small repairs, such as a capacitor, contactor or clogged drain, are almost always worth doing, even on an older system. Large repairs, such as a compressor, an outdoor coil or an indoor coil, are where the decision gets real. A common rule of thumb multiplies the system's age by the repair cost. If the result is above about $5,000, replacement is often the better choice. It is only a guide, but it helps put the numbers in perspective.
4. How often has it failed?
One repair in ten years is normal. Three repairs in two summers is a pattern. If you are calling for service every season, the money is often better spent on a system that will not need it.
5. Is the house actually comfortable?
If some rooms never cool down, the system short-cycles or the bills keep climbing, the problem may be the system size or the ducts rather than one broken part. Replacing equipment is a chance to fix those issues with a proper Manual J load calculation and duct repairs. A repair will not change them.
6. Would a heat pump make sense?
If you are replacing the air conditioner, it is worth pricing a heat pump, which heats and cools in one system. SMUD increased its heat pump rebates in February 2026, listing up to $3,000 for gas-to-electric conversions and $1,000 for electric-to-electric upgrades. Program terms change, so confirm the current rules when you get a quote. Federal heat pump tax credits ended on December 31, 2025.
A simple way to decide
- Repair when the system is under about 10 years old, the repair is small, and the house is comfortable.
- Consider replacing when the system is 12 to 15 years old or more, uses R-22, needs a large repair, or keeps breaking down.
- Replace and upgrade when comfort has always been a problem, because new equipment plus duct fixes can solve it.
